One of my favorite guys
Do you remember a few years ago when there was that horrible shit in Afghanistan where an airstrike that was supposed to kill bad guys ended up blowing up a wedding instead, killing many not-bad guys (and girls)? The military spent a long time saying shit like: "that only 5 to 7 civilians, and 30 to 35 militants, were killed in what it [said] was a successful operation against the Taliban." The reason they were able to do so was they had an "independent press journalist" who was embedded nearby and verified the military's side of things. if you can believe it, it was bullshit. And you'll never guess who was the independent press journalist!! One of my favorite guys!!! THIS GUY | | Monday, August 25th, 2008 | | 3:58 pm |

Article about The Big Lebowski
I always have a hard time explaining to the uninitiated why people care so much about phrases like "we believe in nahssing, lebowski", in the future I should just point them to this article | | Thursday, August 10th, 2006 | | 6:14 pm |

The Duke Nukem Forever List Shortly after releasing Duke Nukem 3D (in 1993), 3D Realms started working on Duke Nukem Forever. Thanks to what has been attributed to insane Everquest addiction by their project lead, the title is still in development. They're talking about releasing this year, so a helpful netizen put together a list of things that have happened during their epic development time, including a list of things that got done faster. The best, of course, is this entry, under "Things that have taken less time than Duke Nukem Forever's Development:" # The United States' entire program to put a man on the moon, from Kennedy's challenge to the landing. compiler venting
Visual Studio 2003 has some compiler bugs in it (some more egregious than others). The h3 lightmapper got bit by the same compiler bug that the h2 lightmapper got bitten by (the same kind of function too, I should have known better) but now that it's resolved I thought venting would help. See, suppose you have a function that is (for example) doing a randomized sampling of a square based on two randomized inputs x1 and x2. Your function may look like this:
// note: real == float
void weak_ass_sauce(real x1, real x2)
{
// do something
}
now, consider these two ways you may call the function:
weak_ass_sauce(real_random(), real_random());
real x1= real_random();
real x2= real_random();
weak_ass_sauce(x1, x2);
In an optimized build, the compiler decides that it can shortcut some work for the first call by computing the result of real_random once, and passing the result to the function in x1 and x2. Calling it the second way coaxes the correct behavior out of the compiler. As you can imagine, sampling a square with a diagonal line can create some strange, hard to track down results. | | Monday, April 17th, 2006 | | 11:42 am |
A few weekends ago I was at a wedding in Miami. Between layovers and cross-country flights, I was able to start and finish "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", which has been staring at me from the to-read pile for over a year. Maybe it was the genius of the book, maybe it was the strange frame of mind I was in seeing my parents again after all this time, but this book fucked my brain like it's never been fucked. I'm still trying to sort it all out in my head, ( but the biggest practical insight I got from it is as follows: ) | | Thursday, March 9th, 2006 | | 3:21 pm |
attn: baseball fans
(I'm looking at you harry) A relative of mine down in miami is working at a company making some sort of baseball statistics game that is different in a bunch of ways from traditional fantasy baseball. I have no idea if it's cool or lame, and he wants feedback on it. can I get some opinions on its placement in the cool/lame gradient? website is here | | Tuesday, March 7th, 2006 | | 3:34 pm |

I finally got a chance to go snowboarding this weekend. Lauren wasn't feeling good so I went out on my lonesome to crystal and met up with Jay and two softies he goes out with. They were all significantly better than me first off, and had already gone out 10+ times this season. I did my best keeping up with them, but being my first time out this season after 3 hours I was completely spent and went home. Shortly after arriving home I fell asleep for 14 hours. I remember back in the day, the first day out of a season was especially brutal, as all the snowboarding related muscles have to rebuild. Pushing through it and going the whole day was a nightmare, but after you recovered you would be good to go for the rest of the season. Pushing through the first day is something I could do at 16, not at 26. | | Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006 | | 10:10 am |
